Early Life and EducationZainul Abedin was born on December 29, 1914, in Mymensingh, East Bengal (now Bangladesh).
His childhood spent by the Brahmaputra River greatly influenced his artistic style and lifelong inspiration. In 1933, he enrolled at the Government School of Art in Calcutta.

His series of watercolors depicting the Brahmaputra won him the Governor's Gold Medal at an all-India exhibition in 1938.
